FAMILIARISATION REPORT

Hawaiian
hospitality |
HAWAII IS HEATING UP WITH AUSTRALIAN GROUP TRAVEL
BUSINESS!
Sue Gaddes recently visited Hawaii, and was fortunate to
experience why Hawaii is one of the hottest destinations for
Australian groups at the moment. And its no wonder why:
- Accessibility is so much easier now - with Qantas, Air Canada,
and new Hawaiian Airlines flights
- The Aussie Dollar strength
- A great team at the Hawaiian Convention & Visitors Bureau in
Sydney
- An exciting range of activities and things to see and do
Our DMC in Hawaii is USA Hosts, and they aim to make each
proposal something special - and take pride in their involvement
from beginning to end of every programme. The feedback we've had
from this "new team" the site inspections they've done, and
groups they've handled has been just sensational, and I'm
thrilled to report that Esther will be visiting Australia to
attend AIME in February 2005 to say Aloha to all her Aussie and
New Zealand friends.
In terms of group activities - Hawaii has so much to offer for
meeting and incentive groups:
- Snorkelling and swimming off Diamond Head
- Rainforest tours and treks
- Kualoa Ranch
- Movie Tour (it’s where they filmed Jurassic Park, and more recently “50
First Dates”. What a
perfect theme for an event! )
- Flying Fox (or “zip-lining” as they call it), ATVs, Horse riding – for
very active groups
And there's a "Secret Island" to finish off your day with a
wonderful beach party!
Whether you plan everything for your group, or give them lots of
time to themselves, whether they're a pure incentive group, or a
meeting group who just want to have a great time - Hawaii is an
ideal choice.

can offer email sue.gaddes@dms-dms.com.au

The stunning Orient Singapore
|
SINGAPORE
-NEW HOTEL UPDATES
The
Oriental Singapore re-opened its doors on 1 December 2004 after
a multi-million dollar renovation. The renovation included the
re-design of all 527 guestrooms and suites, enhancement to all
public areas, dining and meeting facilities. This is the most
significant upgrading project for the hotel since opening in
1987, and repositions the hotel amongst the city's most
luxurious hotels. Guests now enter the dramatic atrium of the
hotel through a single doorway, and the reception area has been
strikingly enhanced with the use of black marble flooring and
rich ebony fretwork grilles.
The Pan Pacific Singapore has unveiled its new look at
Christmas, with the competition of its renovation costing S$3.9
million, with New Year's Eve marketing the official Launch. The
brand new Atrium opened to the public on 24 December 2004.

IT&CMA
TRADE SHOW REPORT FROM THAILAND
|

Sirocco Restaurant on top of the State Tower |
Leila Fiedler recently visited Thailand for the
annual IT&CMA trade show, along with a number of Australian
and New Zealand agents. It was great chance to catch up with many of
the Asian suppliers, and an opportunity for all the buyers to update
themselves on the ever-changing Bangkok (and even with limited time,
rediscover just how fantastic the shopping is!)
Leila was thrilled to have the opportunity to stay at the Sheraton
Royal Orchid – one of the favourite hotels for many of the
Australian MICE groups. Great location, great rooms, and wonderful
service.
The team at Pacific World in Thailand led by Kris and Nong
combined with Pipat and his great team at the Royal Orchid hosted
the Australian & New Zealand buyers for a cocktail cruise and dinner
at the Royal Orchid. By all accounts a great night!
As far as restaurants go – Bangkok must surely be leading the way in
terms of funky and hip eateries!
A few well worth a visit when you’re next in Bangkok:

CHINA
- SHOPPING INSTITUTION "SILK ALLEY" BEIJING CLOSES
Sadly the 5 January 2005 saw the final closing of the famous

"Silk Alley" in Beijing. Ardent shopping fans need not
despair
though as the Pearl Market sells almost everything Silk Alley
used to - from sunglasses to pearls and is still going strong
with the added benefit of being indoors.
There are suggestions to open a new indoor "Silk Alley", but
this is still in the planning stages, so no dates are available
yet.

THE VANYAVILAS IN RANTHAMBORE
|

The Taj Mahal at sunset |
Between the Aravalli and the Vindhya mountain ranges
in South-Eastern Rajasthan lies the Oberoi Vanyavilas, the ultimate
romantic destination for adventurers. Set in 20 acres of landscaped
gardens, lakes and fountains, the resort borders on one of the most
extraordinary wildlife reserves in the world. Vanyavilas is just a
little away from the Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve -
home of the magnificent Indian tiger, deer, leopard, and crocodile.
Vanyavilas is a luxurious jungle resort. No comfort is
spared. Air-conditioned luxury tents are set among lemon and mango trees
by a carp-filled lake. The outdoor swimming pool is heated and there is
a fabulous spa.
The main building recreates the glory of a Royal hunting
palace with hand painted gilded frescoes, murals of elephants and
peacocks, marble and chandeliers. When Indian princes went hunting, they
did it in style. Vanyavilas is an idyllic retreat and unashamedly
luxurious. The resort is 3hours 30minutes from Jaipur Airport and
just 10 minutes from Sawai Madhopur railway station.

EXPERIENCE
IRELAND THE ODYSSEY WAY
|

Experience a traditional Irish pub with Odyssey
|
Odyssey, Irelands' premier DMC, is always inundated with
fantastic feedback, yet recently received some truly special
feedback from a recent program for The Independent Liquor Group.
“Each year since 1988 it’s been my responsibility to find and
organise a suitable destination for our annual conference. When
we identified Ireland as the 2004 venue, I knew it would be good
but you and Kevin and the rest if the team at Odyssey turned it into a
fabulous event. Members of ILG who have been on almost all our
tours since 1988 have praised Ireland as the best ever.
It will probably be 2006 before I have the opportunity to return
to Ireland but be rest assured Kevin and yourself will be my
first point of contact on my return.”

DUBAI
- A FASCINATING INCENTIVE DESTINATION
|

The group in Dubai |
Sabina Rowe recently escorted
a familiarisation group to Dubai with Gulf Dunes and
Emirates Airlines. The group were given the opportunity to
discover some amazing hotels and also experience a rapidly
developing, cosmopolitan destination that effortlessly
combines both modern & traditional influences.
The group began their trip by staying in the Emirates Towers
Hotel. This hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of
Dubai, and is a great option for corporate groups. Everyone
was also fortunate enough to stay in the newly completed Al
Quasar in the Madinat Jumiera complex. This property has an
enchanting Middle Eastern flavour, and is setting the
benchmark in style, comfort, glamour & luxury in Dubai.
The trip was concluded with a spectacular dinner in the
desert under the stars where participants dressed in a
“Dish Dash” or traditional Arabic dresses, followed by a
theatrical entrance into the campsite by camel.
Entertainment included belly dancers, Bedouin henna ladies
and “hubbly bubbly” pipes.
Other activities that Gulf Dunes could organise for a group
while visiting Dubai include:
• Dhow Cruise on Dubai Creek
• Tours of the famous gold & spice soup
• Desert activities including sand skiing, dune bashing & a
variety of other desert “sports”
Gulf Dunes demonstrated a professional “can do” attitude
with impressive attention to detail. Contact
